I can't seem to lose weight is one of the most common phrases I hear when my Clients begin their program with me.
Now most of us will look towards willpower as the problem or maybe it is just a case that you have not found the right 'diet' to follow yet!
Well maybe there is an element of truth in this but I would like you to look at this from a completely new angle; Leadership and character.
Leadership and character
Many of my clients are in positions where they have to show strong leadership and character.
A leading position is not just filled at work; there is any number of specific areas of our life will require us to slip into the leading role every now and then.
While, when it comes to private life, nobody wants to spend time with somebody who always takes over or seems a bit like a know-it-all, it often is highly appreciated by others to have someone who is able, at the right time, to take control of a situation and shift the goals or situation in the right direction.
But what is a good leader?
A leader is a role model.
You can’t just tell people what to do or how to live their life…more often than not, you will not be thanked and could even end up causing a rift.
After everything is said and done at the end of the day, the impression you make by living your life according to your words is what will leave a lasting impression on your peers.
Let your actions speak louder than words and people will see it and respect you for it.
"But Adam, what has this got to do with me dropping the gut and getting rid of these fracking man boobs?" I hear you ask!
Hold on in there my friend, I promise you will be rewarded for humoring me and reading on!
Where was I?
Four-star General Norman Schwarzkopf (also known as "Stormin Norman” or “the Bear”) said:
“Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without strategy.”
These words don’t only apply if you’re fighting a war…having a strong character is probably one of the most important things you can have and yes, you can work on your character.
Schwarzkopf successfully lead an operation that drove out Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi forces from Kuwait in 1991, so he knew a thing or two about leadership.
See one of the big areas that is commonly overlooked when focusing on fat loss or building a strong and powerful body is simply understanding that the plan you need to create to succeed is far far less important than the convictions you create and back up with strong character. The type of strong character needed to hold yourself accountable for your decision to change.
to hold yourself to a higher standard simply cannot happen without a strong character.
So how do you build a strong character?
For those of you who aren’t quite there yet: there is hope and there are strategies that can help you improve your credibility and build self-confidence which are major qualities for a foundation to become a good leader, whether you’re looking for a boost in your career or in your personal life (read health and weight!).
It all starts simply with a strong commitment.
The commitment to actually make a strong decision and actually bloody well stick to it!
You want change? Consciously decide that you WILL CHANGE and THEN you can start to think about how to make a plan.
Set some goals.
Ensure you take small steps.
But I hear you screaming at the laptop...
"I have already tried!"
I have already failed!"
Sure you have!
Can you name somebody who has not failed?
Not to sound super flat but it’s all about getting up again.(get up Bambi!)
Maybe it was the case that you just need a wingman; someone you have to commit to, get support from and bounce ideas off.
Oh speaking of…make sure you surround yourself with the right people!
I can’t even begin to explain how important your social network is.
We are the sum of the 5 people we spend our time with.
Hang out with people in shape all the time, I would put good money on your health improving.
Now, of course, there are certain people you can’t up and throw out of your life but you CAN choose who to spend your time with.
If you have people in your life that seem to push your health in the wrong direction, that their behavior and influence does not support your growth towards a healthier body then it might be worth asking yourself if you should be spending your time and energy with someone different.
Now I’m not saying ditch your all your beer drinking friends…sometimes it really is just the matter of having a chat and letting them know where you stand and what your goals at the moment, why they are important to you and how much easier it will be if you have support.
Now the reality is that real friends will always support you.
But sometimes it means letting go of certain relationships for a while in order to gain your health goals and establish the habits needed to make a real and lasting change.
Sure that may sound hard but it is all about taking steps in the right direction, no matter how small they are…just don’t stay still and don’t go backward.
If you are feeling really overwhelmed but you know you really need to make a change for the sake of your happiness, confidence, and longevity, if you long for leadership qualities and a stronger character but just don’t know where to start or feel that as a MAN you should just be able to TOUGH IT OUT, then I promise you, you will fall short and repeat the pattern for another ten or twenty years or until its too late.
Do NOT keep rolling the dice on your health because of some bullshit notion that blokes should not talk about how they are feeling...that is how we ended up with men suicides rates being four times higher than that of women in this country.
Hiding in the dark is easy, coming out and actually asking for help takes some proper giant man balls.
